What significant event do you recall from your childhood?

OK, so since my friends let me know (on an almost daily basis) that I really am bad at keeping my blog updated, I thought that I would try a different approach. So without further ado...

What significant event do you recall from your childhood?

An interesting question in and of itself...there are many significant events from my childhood that I recall vividly (while my short term memory is not always the best, my long term memory is very long). Every event, every choice that I have made (for better or worse) has helped shape my life and allowed me to grow to be the man I am today. There have been many happy or not so happy events which have occurred throughout the years.

One of the most positive events that allowed me to shape my character was becoming friends with Ben Tolman. While we went to school together our entire lives, we really started to hang out our freshman year of High school. As time passed, he invited me to attend a camp out that is Boy Scout troop was going on. I had been a scout for many years, starting in cubs as an 8 year old, and growing into the scouting program as time progressed.

Most of my experiences in scouts came about regardless of whether the leaders wanted to assist or not. Ben's Troop was different. When he invited me to that first camp out, his Scoutmaster, Ron, asked if I could follow one simple rule..."do what you are asked when you are asked to do it"...it was easy enough to follow that rule. As I began attending that troop in earnest, I began to learn leadership skills that would and have served me throughout my entire life.

It was a boy ran troop (which basically means the boys decided what activities would be done with the guidance and support of their leaders). It allowed us to learn how to lead, how to live by the Scout Oath taking seriously our Duty to God and Country (I get teary eyed when I listen to patriotic music or ponder about the cost that our forefathers must have paid for our freedom). It also served the purpose of instilling in us the responsibility of being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

As I have gotten older and my oldest son, now almost 14, is three merit badges and his service project away from his Eagle, I have been able to share with him (as well as my boy in WEBELOS) the essence of scouting; teaching him the lessons that I began to learn in earnest at his same age. It has been challenging at times (as I am sure it was for my parents growing up...sorry mom and dad), but even if he learns a few of the lessons I learned without having to learn them the hard way, he will be much better off.

While I have had many significant events happen to me in my life, very few days go by that I do not think about our 'Panther Patrol' (the leadership patrol) and the friendships made throughout those years.

Well, Hannah finally went and did it...she turned eight. THis is a picture of her in her Baptism dress (and no she didn't wear it in the water...got to love the jumpsuit). Grandma and Grandpa Gibbons came up to share her experience.

Catch up

The Fat Man is a slacker and hates to update his blog...so here goes...

I am in my 4th week of my 3rd class at University of Phoenix. Freaking Theory of Ethics...bleh...it's dry enough by it self...add in the theory pieces...zzzzzzzzz...sorry dozed off.

After much consideration, I made the small leap from using and updating at myspace.com to facebook...I got onto myspace to try and find friends from high school...yeah didn't happen. Facebook on the other hand has been has been a gold mine of finding.

We took some new family photos a couple of weeks ago that I will update once we purchase them...

Work changed again. Our regional manager has a vision of the QA Liaisons as Consultants more than Liaisons.
Good points:
  • I'm not working one-on-one with individual bankers
  • I get to use my adult teaching and coaching skills

Down side:

  • 1 day a week of Division Reports...bleh...

I got a new calling in the ward as a troop committee member. I am responsible for the records and advancement of the troop. Records were a mess...but we have it almost completely cleaned up.

New Beginings

Wow...as i looked at my blog, I realized just how big of a slacker I was...so here is my update.

After many years of having an almost complete degree in Business management, i am going back to school in August. I only have about a year and a half left to be done with it. I have decided that after i am done, i will be applying at NNU for their Distance MBA program. What can i say...it's time.

They family is doing well! Jessica is busy with her million and one projects that keep her going from day to day. She is in the process of finishing a blanket for Harrison (I'm sure she will post a picture of it on her blog).

Conner is getting ready for a huge summer. After vacation, he and Noah are going to California for 2 weeks. Camping, hiking, fishing, boating...pretty much anything that can be done in the outdoors. He is back for a week and leaves for scout camp. And then he is going on the Martin's cove trek with the youth from our ward.

Kaitlyn is busy playing little mom...yes Harrison would prefer to be with her at all times, unless of course he is hungry or tired.

Noah started on some new meds 2 months ago and has become quite the funny wise ass (Peter, I think that he could give you a run for your money.)

Hannah is busy being a girl, Lexi is freaken hilarious, and Bella is all about her.

Harrison is trying to crawl forward and sat up for the first time today.

Work is work...my responsibilities have changed again this year, so I seem to always be just a little bit behind all of the time. (it drives me nuts to be behind). Our center manager asked me 2 weeks ago when i was going to apply for a supervisor position...hmm, that would be an interesting change!

But other than that, life is life...it comes at you and you either learn how to move with the flow, or you don't...maybe the flow will slow down sometime in the future.

Last Tuesday night, Jessica and I met at the Shopko for kids eye appointments. Conner was at academic bowl and called half way through to say he was done, so I left with two of the little girls and Harrison to go get him.

As we were heading back to Shopko, We turned the corner and headed down Caldwell Blvd to go back to Shopko. We signaled to get into the turn lane and without any reactionary time, a Tahoe pulled out in front of me.

I don't remember too much of it. It is kind of a blur. What I do remember is realizing that I was going to hit the guy and diving over to the passenger side to protect the kids. After that, I remember the jolt and I remember sitting up and rolling down my window. I also remember Conner reacting very fast!

As soon as it happened, he saw the powder in the car and thought it was on fire! When I regained consciousness, he (Conner) was out of the car and working quickly to get everyone out! I am so proud of how level headed he (Conner) was - especially for a 12 year old that was just in an accident that serious.

My face was burned from the chemicals in the airbags...and I was up coughing all night. I had a big knock on his head and an abrasion . After the swelling went down, i was left with 2 big black eyes that just get worse every day. The airbags literally exploded the glasses off of my face. It also knocked me out for a moment and gave me a concussion.

Conner has a big lump on his head. Harrison is OK.thank goodness for seat belts!

I am very grateful that I was in the lane I was in. If I had been over one lane to the left, the guy would have hit us instead, and he would have hit right where Conner and Harrison were sitting.I went and looked at the car today. I didn’t realized how bad it was until i saw it. The steering wheel was pushed back right where my chest was. I am so grateful that we had airbags-or there is no knowing how seriously hurt he might have been.

This is what I looked like today:
